Entryways to the home and heart...

Well, it is a fact that the entry room of our home sets the tone for what is to come, serves as a true first impression and shouts out your style from the get go.

(for the lovers of chocolate and brown; Benjamin Moore Bittersweet Chocolate)

When someone enters your home what do they see? Are you happy when you walk in your front door? It is usually such a small space, but has such a big impact and why not maximize that impact, not just for others but for you?

Maybe your front entry or an entry on a second landing needs a bit of a lift or change around...it might not take very much, perhaps a fresh coat of paint in a different color, maybe a new rug, a large glass vase with some greenery, a mirror to replace that old print? a new coat rack, storage for your shoes (who wants to see all those shoes anyways?), maybe a new lighting fixture, nothing too pricey just something fun and different...

So, think about it, get creative and remember it doesn't have to be something big, just something fresh and different to make you smile and relax when you walk in your front door.

That is the sound I heard when I opened this blog spot to post...ohh been so absent here in this delightful zone of design and loveliness for just downright too long...I miss this space...sometimes there is just too much on one's plate...or platter or whatever you call a oversized,very large dish and I happen to have a few in my possession and you know how you think that time is just zipping by, that you might be missing out on things that are happening right under your nose...heck, I tell you, I can completely relate....I lay awake at times wondering how to fit it all in...how and where?

So, not to bore with details of such life issues, let's get back to the nitty, gritty of cool design, decor, spaces and such...don't know about you, but I am in need of some serious shelving and organizing in my creative space (which is really just simply too small and not creative in the least bit...I am still not-so-patiently waiting for my own shack of bliss...otherwise known as a studio)...I have sent a request out to my jack-of-many-trades, multi-talented man FZ for these...how simple, who would have thunk? and for under $200...come on...why wait?

What lies ahead...

Well, we all have them, you know the projects that need doing around the house.

Are you the type to make numbered lists in specific order of importance or do you just do things randomly and try to complete them in whatever order they come? Do you start something and never finish? Are you the weekend warrior who bangs out the job at hand in two days?
I suppose whichever way it works best for you, provided you get the job(s) done is really the key, right?

I am one to write a list, which I think is in the order things should be done, however, there is a tall, handy and hardworking man in this house who sees fit to do things other ways, and sometimes that is a good thing, sometimes...well, you know.

This brings up the issue of our yard, we have cleared the hillside, graded a portion for kids and have been left with a huge sliding slope of terrain which needs planting...here is where I come in...the plant picker, layout gal and hole digging mama. Here are some pics before, and hopefull these will make you feel really good about anything you might have on your to do list, as this is one big load of a job. Follow me as I pick, slide, dig and sweat my way into a new outdoor space!

Recently, a client asked me to help them as they moved into a larger home with some very different spaces, from what they previously had. They needed to make everything they already owned work and make rooms inviting and warm. Here is the very large entry/front room which was to become the 'formal living' area.

Fresh New Year...

I am not sure about you, but for this gal every New Year brings a feeling of a fresh, clean, slate...or at least the urge to organize and clean out, update and refresh spaces, the desire to complete tasks around the house are renewed and motivation, although sometimes hard to muster, is bumped up with the expectations of changing some important aspects of my surroundings.
I am starting with my personal space, because that is, afterall, where we are most inspired...don't you agree?

So, on that note, let the organizing and cleaning out begin!
Here are some helpful and fun ideas to get us all going in the right direction.

Here is a pretty little thought... line a drawer with velvet or felt and add some vintage tea cups & saucers to organize and display your bobbles and jewelry. Simply measure the height of the drawers side, (don't measure the front as that is higher) and collect some teacups that are just a little shorter, the lining on the drawer bottom with help slipping and sliding. Hang earrings on tea rim, place bigger pieces in saucers.

A vintage medicine cabinet turned into a beautiful display case, I can see getting creative with fabric inside and some simple little hooks & wire.
Same idea with a old shadow box, fun hooks or even drawer pulls and then pretty little bowls you already have to store rings.

A peg board in the closet, painted a fun color and used to get all those straggling things on the floor up and out of the way.

in the midst of completely transforming our yard and hillside into a wonderful space for our wee ones to play, explore, embark on adventures and just be free...i am also looking to alter their living/sleeping space. i need to make one room work and be spacious enough for two children to share, one of whom is younger, goes to sleep earlier and one who loves to read at night and have her own unique area not to be touched by the other...hmmmm, so i am scouring for inspiration and ideas and here are a few of my favorites so far.

over here at my country pad not far from the sea, we are embarking on a rather large backyard project, of which I am quite excited to say the least...and so, I have been poking around looking and storing ideas for plants, pavers, steps, oh any and everything outdoorsy...here are some cool ones...will be posting pics of our before, during and afters you can be sure...

sometimes, the road to bliss is a long one...and for our poor lukers (luke) it is particularly long, he has hated any moving vehicle since a wee lad of 8 weeks when we brought him home and he threw up the contents of his little stomach on our lovely 6 year old daughter, who, for some reason chose that action to love him more, she still recalls the story in all it's grim and not so glory...but loves him so, as does our wee son...a few shots from our trip up north, before we got to the real beauty of so. cal terrain and the ocean blue...

just a few days ago, i opened our wee mailbox to find a happy sight...the monthly arrival of one of my fav mags Dwell, which came at a most timely of times as we are making some decisions about a pretty big remodel to our home in the country not far from the sea. and because i am a lover of light (who isn't really?), this edition jumped right out (they all do for one reason or another) and i had to share some pics for those of you who might have missed it...if i close my eyes this would be a dream room where we would live, entertain, study, read, chic chat, oh the list is unending...check this house out;

the wall is joined at the corners as a window! i now have a new outlook on our decking windows...ahh dreamy.

We recently purchased a vacation home on wheels. We are most excited about planning upcoming family getaway trips and all the fun we are going to have traveling together, and seeing new sights. Of course, even though we did not buy an Airstream (seen below), I am thinking of ways to customize and design the inside into a space that reflects our taste and clean, mid century style with a twist of some vintage as well...I found these lovely ideas and now my creative is flowing...check these out:

The dark walls and such are a little too deep for my taste, but such a cool look and the pops of color make me smile.

This is a teardrop trailer, which is small enough to be pulled by a mini cooper...a little too small for my taste, but how cute is this and check out the kitchen in the rear....!

Since we are now moving into Spring and daylight savings is upon us here in So. Cal...I find myself dreaming of outdoor spaces and as the weather gets warmer and the days are longer we always end up enjoying our family dinnertime outside on the patio...here are some inspirational fresh air dining spaces I have come across...

These modern, simple lines above are so crisp and calming.

Love, love the concrete table top above in this Tuscan style outdoorsy space.

Great for a small patio area...love the feel of the colors with the textured/aged back wall...

Makes me want to chop some veggies, toss a salad and open a lovely bottle of Pinot Grigio then head out for a relaxing meal with family and friends.

sometimes i tend to get caught up in my succulents and all their wonderfulness (see shop), however, i also get swept away by the beauty and simplicity of flowers...so why not combine the two? this is a pairing with shades of green/hints of silver/blue/purple found in these drought tolerant, easy to care for echeveria succulents with simple white, clean and crisp hydrangea's, who would not love to have this as a centerpiece at a dinner party, a wedding, outdoor dining...anywhere.

Hello and first off, i must apologize for my lack of presence here at this blog space...so far 2010 has been a busy one...and this weekend i am off to the desert to be part of a lovely and most inspirational art show...not sure how this will go and how my work will be received, but you just don't know till you go, and i just love being around all those soulful gals and guys who are so grounded and real...so i head out on a wee road trip tomorrow..and my shop will be updated in the a.m. prior to departure.

I wish you all a very happy, heARTful, and loving Valentines, I don't really buy into all that hearty lovey dovey, chocolate laced, marketing for love stuff, but I do believe that everyone deserves their fair share of lovin' and attention, and if some folks need a day to do that, well then so be it, in my wee opinion, everyone should be filled to the brim each day, but who am i, well, i am me and that means alot.

so go gently, stay human and be happy.

Who says love is not in style...Ok, I realize we are coming close to that lovey dovey holiday. Now, for the record, I have never bought into that whole hearts and kisses thing, chocolate and roses...yuck. However, I do remember when FZ and I had just met and our first few Valentines Days were rather fun, sort of a mystery surrounding what would pass and what might come to arrive in my wee hands as a gesture of affections. Now, time has passed and children fill our lives, somedays we just feel like loving ships passing in the hallway at 5:00 a.m.

It is all good, just different.

So, here is a stylish and lovely design to remind us that love is in the air...subtly of course...just added to the shop...

It's been way too long, sorry for my absence here, it's been a busy time...when is it not? New creations coming out of my studio with a bit of a holiday whimsy, however, they can easily be enjoyed all year. I am loving working with glass orbs of varying sizes, there is something so serene and beautiful about the clarity and openness from every angle that makes these pieces simply lovely. For those that hang, they swirl gently and there is a peek in to every side of wonder, little bits of nature can be captured from any angle. The round orb shape is somewhat modern, and then adding natural elements give them a very organic and hip feel.

Warming up spaces

Sometimes it just takes a little something something to make a room light up and when you are in that space, you feel a comfort and warmth which makes you say Ahhhhhh...here is a new line I am working on. I love candlelight, it makes things seem so warm, relaxed and usually kind of romantic, so why not mix it with living (safely) lovelies to inspire and lighten? This is short and sweet as sometimes a picture is enough (plus I find the long wordy posts hard to read due to time constraints, so I like to keep my entries a bit on the short winded side, to the point and leaving you to hop along to your next order of business). Have a stylishly, superb day!

Here are some shots of a recent redesign completed by KZ interiorz for a lovely lady who just wanted some truly refreshed spaces in her home. She was a joy to work with, so open and willing to make switch-outs and changes. This is why I love, I mean, really love, what I do, making a difference in people's living environments and working completely with what they have, is an amazing thing. So, this gal left for the day (and was so happy to do so, it made me giddy) and then returned a while after I was gone and I recieved a lovely phone call alerting me of her excitment and happiness with her new home. To imagine, she came home, turned on the lights and was delightfully surprised by all the beauty her home was waiting to share. Special art was grouped to showcase it's beauty, treasured keepsakes and memorable pieces were displayed to shine, artwork moved and made to blend in each seperate space...new creations designed for her own rooms in mind by KZ interiorz brought new life and pop to certain areas in which she was pleasantly surprised by for a few days following.

So, here is to our homes, for all they offer, they usually offer more, sometimes it just takes a fresh perspective and some alterations (which are not permanent) to make us fall back in love with our homes, rooms and sacred spaces. Afterall, our homes are an extension of us, they hold our treasures, our quirkiness, our style, our flaws, our personalities, they are us and sometimes we too, need a bit of a change up. It's all good.

I presently can only handle 4 shows per year and I love them, so lately I have been inspired to create some new pieces and I will have more pics to follow and show you all, but for now, I thought I would post these here as they really do make a space more wonderful, and I am all about the wonder (and spaces!).

Memory Cloth

I saw this over at livingetc. and thought it is a great idea for the upcoming holidays...this is so something I would do. Host a dinner party, Thanksgiving, Holiday, New Years and have friends and family jot down a thought, inspiration, dream, wisdom, (oh heck anything they want) and then follow the simple steps to a lasting memory cloth...could even fold and sew one whole side into a loop to hang on a cool rod as a wall hanging for a spell...or take out the following year to have a laugh, I can see having a New Years dinner party and the theme for the memory cloth would be a dream/goal for the following year. Then come together again the following year (for another New Years party, love that) to enjoy the follow ups ...do a new one each year...well, it's all very fun and festive...I like it.

My schedule probably would not allow for embroidery (see Step 3 below) time, so I am thinking some cool fabric pens would do the trick..keeping with one or two colors...or say gold or silver...just a thought. But if you have the time the embroidery idea is a great one and it would look quite sharp.

STEP 1: What you need: A heavy-duty linen tablecloth, a water-erase pen, embroidery threads, embroidery needles and scissors.

STEP 2: Get your guests to write messages directly onto the tablecloth with the water-erase pen. Top tip: Write larger letters than normal so the words are clear when they're sewn.

STEP 3: After the party is over, backstitch over the ink at your leisure. Try to keep the stitches on the lines and of a uniform length (about 2cm). Once sewn, rub with a damp cloth to remove the ink.

Art is wonderful...

Well, besides being a best friend, a holder & maker of memories we carry in our hearts and laugh about over and over again & all around great soul...this artist is amazing (& very dear to my heart) and so it only seems right to share what a wonderful addition art makes to any space here on my blog.

She recently paid us a visit and my heart is full of happiness at seeing her and spending some wonderful times, but the same heart is heavy with missing that very person.

Vibrant, colorful and unique prints to inspire & beautify.

I love to buy art when I travel, it may be just a small piece, but to have a memory and connection to somewhere I have been which I can then hang or display in my home is priceless to me, each time I pass it or look upon it, I am taken back to that moment in which I found it and was drawn in some way.

This art does that to me, perhaps because it is like a old friend (so is the artist) or because the colors relax and inspire me at the same time, but when I see it I smile and my soul fills.

Married to the man...

When you are married to the man who does everything...in that sense I mean he is a fix all, do all, and mainly paint all guy, sometimes you just have to stop and say Thank You to whatever forces brought about this wonderful being in your life.
As a professional painter this man has the eye and the knack for turning a boring room into something spectacular.

So, just to let you know, we are living in a house that should, and will, have a blog site all it's own when the work truly begins...we are going to be doing a complete and simply wonderful remodel to what was my parents' home.

My family of 4 (2 wee ones, my husband, plus moi) live here now, and as much as we love it, and the bones are standing for our mid-century home to exist, there is so much to do and such a budget to find in order to do it all, to be quite honest.

However, this weekend we have some old friends coming to town and we all know that nothing lights a fire more than visitors to get a few things, major and minor, moving along in one's house....so my gracious, and most amazing, husband, after working all day, is painting our entry...my long desired white...yep, I am moving into the white zone for backdrop, it makes blending all other variations of color so smooth.

Having a more white backdrop (canvas if you will) makes it so easy to bring in a variety of colors into a space.
So, here is the man (perhaps not at an angle completely welcomed by all in above shot) but the point is that our men are so gracious and we need to always recognize that fact.

And this is our brand new chalkboard pocket door at the entry to greet guests and all that enter. I will shoot a pic when we write on it (that rhymed).

Home on the road

I wish wish wish I had pictures of our 73' Terry trailer when we got our hands on it years ago and the mini transformation we made to our wee home on the road. I will take some shots this weekend to share. However, I am getting ready to do a small overhaul in decor so maybe these will be befores and then afters will come soon...if the man has his way, he would like to do a complete makeover (tear it apart), but I say facelift, my dearest, facelift will do just fine.

Regardless, we are heading out on a family-downtime-getaway in our rolling pad.

Long walks, quiet sunsets, knitting by the fire, soft breezes whispering the secrets of the sea in our windows at night, dirty hands, feet and faces from day long playing outdoors, surrounded by good friends...I am ready.
I shall return next week with some goodies.

Excuse the lag in blog posts, I am not quite sure how time slips away so darn quickly.

So, have a beautiful weekend and make sure you stop to enjoy where you are, be it home or away.

Light up your life

Often at dinnertime, even amongst surrounding craziness that occurs with 2 wee ones and 2 four legged lovelies, I get down a few of my votives (leftover from our wedding over 9 years ago, we had them all over the tables)...and I light candles on the dinner table and set on the mantle as well.

This always somehow relaxes me, the act of lighting them and then the warm glow and soft light make our dinnertime very intimate (yes, even with wee ones) and feels special in a quiet way. Then of course, after dinner everyone makes a wish and blows out a candle or two.

Here are some inspirational and idea sparking ways to display candles I came across and thought I would share, some are great for upcoming holidays or just anytime.

A lovely way to greet guests...

Print something special in a fun font, personal or relating to your event (what you are thankful for at Thanksgiving even naming those at the table) on parchment paper and attach to outside of simple glass candle holder.

I love candlelight, in bathrooms, in bedrooms, on tables, outside, you name it, candlelight just adds that special something to a space.

Of course, you must be careful, and take extra caution with little ones and pets as well.

Well, it is obvious I am lover of all things from nature, woods, lichen, moss, plants, oh you name it, if it came from outside I want to try and bring it in.

By that I mean as art, decor, furnishings, textiles and that which surrounds me to make my space seem undefined (in terms of out and in) and to bring some peace and harmony from nature into my everyday inside living spaces. Here are some shots I enjoyed and thought I would share.
This freestanding teak bath was handmade by a boat builder, and I rather like the other surrounding touches of wood in the screen backdrop, stool and mat.

I love the influx of green in these pics, I mean the varying shades, and the different textures and lines.

I know there is just an outpouring of going 'green' these days...I don't want to inundate with that idea but I just happen to be quite fond of the color green.

In case you have been to this blog and do not know...I am also here and have a shop here.

My art feeds my soul and since I love all that I do, it comes together wonderfully and keeps me quite happy.

I started my Etsy shop sometime ago and am just now finding the time to get the shelves filled with my designs. Here are a few, and believe me when I say there is so so much more coming.

I hold a strong love and appreciation for succulents and low maintenance botanicals, unique pieces of earths treasures and all things natural.

These pieces are like time standing still, however, there is something alive and quietly breathing in every one of them (usually requiring very little maintenance, just a whole lot of lovin').
I am most happy when combining colors and textures to enhance and peacefully add to any space.

Since summer is coming to a close and school is about to start, I figured it was time for a wee getaway.

So our bags are packed and we are off for some serious fun in the sun and relaxation. Sometimes, it is nice to remove ourselves from our regular spaces, the change of scenery brings on a rejuvination and coming back home is always somehow refreshing and new.

So off we go!

No interruptions, just the family soaking it all in.

I am bringing a book I started over 3 weeks ago and never find time to read (except Dr. Seuss, Richard Scary etc. etc., we'll be bringing those too) and am hoping for some stolen moments of reading bliss under the canopy above!

While visiting a somewhat new (feels old) friend just the other day at her home on top of the world...I was reminded of how important our childrens spaces are...and how they deserve small or pretty good sized (when you are on top of mountains) corners of the world created just for them and their wonderous imaginations...here are some shots of all that caught me by wonder, and not so surprise. Here is to kids playhouses, jungle gym's, above-the-ground (yep, you read right) pools, just a few things that make kids so absoluetly happy.

Oh yes, and Mums who are wonderfully amazing and so great to hang with!

And with the exception of my time which was a total of 3 hours, all that was purchased was the $40 mosaic pot and $15 plant which is in it under the mirror....yep, that is it.

Just in case you don't know, I am an expert (not to toot my own horn or anything) at transforming spaces utlizing what is already in a home.
I get completely excited about the job, the hunt (in house for treasures), the whole process is amazing, then the outcome...oh that is the best.

However, in an effort to add to the excitment of the reveal, I am breaking this up into a series of two posts. So, here are the before shots of a master bedroom which I just completed and I will post the afters (which I already have, sneaky me) in a day or two for your enjoyment.

It is good, I must tell you. So you really should come back and see for yourself.

Well, I seem to have a thing for hanging out these days...from the ceiling, rafters, beams...Oh really just wherever I can...I am speaking, of course, about my designs...

These beauties are suspended in time, I made this for my shop, but I am pretty sure it is going to stay here in my kitchen, as it seems right at home, watching life go by quietly from above.

It will be witness to all the little feets running back and forth, to the barking, freezer runs for the boo-boo bunny, much much cooking, cleaning and well, hanging out.

The kitchen seems to be the main hub of this house and I rather like it that way. Kitchens are great places to get connected, not just with the food being prepared, but with that lovely, quiet conversation at the end of the day, with visitors catching up at get togethers, kids doing homework while waiting for a snack, this is not even to mention the holiday hoopla that occurs in this wonderful room.

I love the kitchen, my Mum loves it, my daughter loves it now, and I hope she always will.

I have finally officially launched my Etsy shop.

The doors are open & shelves are filling up.

Granted there are only 4 designs for sale right now, but so much on the burner and since I am excitedly prepping for the upcoming art show , creative forces are abundant.

Most recently, been working on table top glass ball terrariums which house wee mini livescapes, as I like to call them....oooo they are so special. Will post soon.

I am still getting familiar with the concept and steps for shipping my pieces. No problem.

Who on earth would not want a 26 Ft. High/22 Ft. Wide Teepee in their backyard?

Since I have moved to the country and am blessed with more room and space to grow, I find myself dreaming constantly of kids spaces and retreats for little creative beings to flourish...with land abundant and so much potential, it is not hard to understand why I find myself dreaming of kidland galore.

Love this combined work/play/craft space with kids art on walls, matching chairs with neutral colors and relaxed vibe.

These stools (Cookie) are cool, comfy and so chic. I really am digging cork right now...

I love Pouffes...that sounds strange when I say it. But somehow these wee pieces of furniture have become a staple in my home...perhaps it is the two small folk who run a bit amuck randomly plunging and diving at all times.

(the ones shown here are from Souk , of course, I am partial to Dutch design/shops, being wed to one of the most wonderful Dutchmen ever FZ)...

are a safe and reassuring place to rest, not to mention pouffes are stylish and simple and take up minimal space. There is something organic & Bohemian-like about being down close to the ground...I rather enjoy it.

Well, now that summer is in full gear and outdoor living is a huge part of everyday life here in my neck of the woods (So. Cal), I am, once again, intrigued by outdoor spaces and creating an ultimate, personal oasis in one's own backyard.

First off, how cool is this pathway to a yard beyond? Enclosed in Bamboo...my favorite.

Here are some pics I came across and thought I'd share to inspire, dream of, and even copy if desired!

Here is a little glam garden getaway, liking the mix & matching of modern, vibrant chairs with antique table and chandelier. This is a simple look that would not be that hard to achieve.

Weekend bedroom notes...

Well, le weekend is upon us and what better time to discuss how to reclaim your bedroom.

Bedrooms are such special places to relax, unwind & re-energize, they are our private retreats from the world. If, you are like me, you mainly just sleep in this room (not to mention the most important time of the day; early morning cuddles and hugs with little warm bodied folks).

Nonetheless, here are a few tips and hints to help you get that old lovin' feeling back for your bedroom.

Now, because disorder in this personal space can disrupt our lives it is key to organize this room in the best way possible for your well being.

Think outside the box...what I mean by that is that perhaps the normal formula of bed, side table, closet and dresser do not work and are not effective in helping solve the clutter problem.

If your bedside table has no purpose (storage/shelf/drawer), it may be subject to becoming a surface for clutter. So either do away with it, or have fun scouting out one that will solve this problem for you.

Closets are key, if your closet is not well thought in regards to how clothes/shoes are stored then those items will have no home & end up all over the room. Get additional shelving, reorganize the closet, I like, if space permits to bring the dresser into the closet. If you think of the main objective for your room is to relax and re-charge then you will see how clearing your space is of utmost importance.

A dear friend asked me to give her advice when she was recently cleaning out her closet and my words of mantra for her to chant to herself while working were: "When in doubt...Throw it out"...she found another statment to work for her which went "Love the peron, not the thing"...that might help.

If your bedroom is scattered with piles of magazines or unread books, get them out of there, how many books can you read at one time, maybe 2? That is how many should be kept next to your bed. If you excercise in your bedroom (wow, I give you credit) and have items of such, keep them clear of clothing (should be in your newly organized and re-vamped closet).

Ok, hope this helps and now get into that room and start to declutter, clean up the mess and unwind!

Wow, what a delay in posting...I am back.

Sincere apologies, life is busy, as you well know.

I am slowly but surely stepping out (building courage) and moving forward with introducing my designs, so if you visit me here you will see firsthand and follow where I am with my work as well as new listings for my Etsy shop.

So, I thought it would be fun to show you some work in case you haven't or won't make it to Stilllily...

Step into a new entry...

With summer upon us, I think it is time to step up, clean out & organize key spaces in our homes (and minds! but that is a whole other post).

So join me over the next week as I provide tips and insight to help you organize and clear your mind and rooms of clutter and style your spaces to reflect your personal taste.

Now, a good place to start is the entry/foyer as that is the first place that you (unless you enter through the garage so you don't have to deal with your entry) and visitors see first.

Entryways come in all shapes and sizes and most have the same organizational challenges; items of clothing, shoes, bags, mail, homework all get dumped right as one walks in the front door. So keeping this area clutter free and welcoming means simply finding a place for all those items, some belonging there, some not.

Since many entryways are fairly small this work of organzing is tough. There is a limited amount of space to work with and coming up with decorative storage solutions in this area is key.

Warm and welcoming lighting makes a great impact and softens the feel in an entry. Go through treasures to find a decorative box or bowl to store keys and mail on an entry table. If coats/sweaters/hats are an issue, have fun searching local consignment shops or flea market for a unique and fun coat rack. If wall space is available hang hooks to free up space. A low bench with storage (hide those dirty old shoes) works nicely under a wall rack for putting on shoes and storage as well, add a colorful cushion for pop and fun.

I love color.
I also love the simple and sophisticated statement that black and white make in a room.

I found these pics in Notebook Magazine and thought I would share.

Summer makes me think of crisp, clean (& relaxing) colors, but really you could bring in so many pops of color to mesh and blend with good ol' black and white...hmmm thinking coral, turquoise (my fav)...liking some of the olive colors I am seeing as well as lavender and light pink hues.

I actually have a desk very close to this one and now I am thinking maybe it would look good in black...

Here is a space which I tranformed, this is a tricky room, it is at the entry of a home, however it is a small and tight formal living room as well...so upon entering this is the first room one sees.

The trick was to scale down on the furnishings (slipper chairs) and choosing rich but subtle fabrics was key in keeping it on a more formal but relaxed look and feel. The original artwork above the couch, I switched out to be placed in the family/den and it was showcased much better in that room.

This client was interested in purchasing all new pieces and so we worked with her existing accessories and the new furnishings were found at a high end furniture warehouse which offered custom features at great prices.

Colors of Summer

Californian Summers...days are longer...the sun sits high & strong over these hills that surround...I am reminded again and brought full circle to the often uncertain California June weather...

but still I am amazed with it's familiar comfort, the ocean's crisp cleansing washes away the heaviness and the breeze lifts me to a place of childhood carlessness and light.

Have you ever thought of creating a beachscape in your own backyard?
Upon a recent trip to my favorite nursery, I thought of all the variations of beautiful,
low maintenance arrangments that could be created...
I know you might not always relate succulents to the beach,
but actually they are found throughout beach areas and of course in (my favorite) the always amazing desert,
which reflects California lifestyle beyond description..nowhere like it in the world.

Any of these succulents can be placed in a colorful pot, try red, orange, as I was so taken with on this trip, or a turquoise blue (my fav) and partially fill the bottom of a low, wide pot with potting soil, set 3-4 plants (still in their nursery pots) to arrange the way you see fit, when happy, gently knock plants out of their pot while gently teasing roots that are coiled together and fill with extra soil just up to an inch or two of pot rim, tap top to firmly place and water.

Now, carefully pour a mulch of washed sand (I like the kind that is white and sparkles a bit) atop the soil.

And finally finish with a piece of driftwood or other beachlike treasure you have found (or use as an excuse to go find!)
Set the pot on a sunny patio (light afternoon shade in hot inland areas).

Water once a week or so.

I will put one together and post it soon.

Now sit back and enjoy!

This is the exact reason I love what I do, when someone becomes connected with their home and feels peaceful and happy in their special spaces..it.is truly a rewarding feeling. It is so important for us all to have homes that reflect our personality & lifestyle and for which we are comfortable in , proud of and overall just love!

Succulents so sweet

I am fusing my woods and natural materials to sit side by side with succulents...why not? They are drought tolerant and thus require little water, easy on the environment, they come in such wonderful, different shapes and colors. These beauties are amazing (well, I think so at least) and I have been cultivating and expanding my succulent collection.

Much of the time, with two small, incredibly insightful children, I find myself stopping to take it all in...all that surrounds and passes me by (or I pass by)... I am constantly amazed and never let down by what I see, smell, live and am in those moments.

Here is a golden ray of light which made me stop and admire the wind, blooms, wonder and love all around me.

A little man of real intrigue and interest in all he encounters, in a field of gold, embracing the windy swirl of a sun drenched moment.

Life is amazing. I am so lucky.

Oh the great Backyard...

I used to subscribe to Sunset magazine & loved it, then it ran out and between Dwell and Domino, I just pretty much forgot about how much I completely enjoyed the articles, tips and down-to-earth California style that comes across every page. Granted, I could only dream about some of the featured spaces/homes/gardens/recipes...but that is what it's all about anyways, right?
So, upon renewing my subscription (missing that Domino and needing a bit of a replacement fix) I strolled through the pages online to get some summer inspiration and planting info.

This Phoenix backyard looking out to Camelback Mountain is a dreamscape...the fiberglass chairs are secured on that top step of the pool and does it get any more tranquil than looking out onto all those agaves, red yucca, creosote bush, saguaros, and palo verde.

Which brings me to my ever blooming succulent garden...pics to come another day.

Twisted but Stylish

Who says you can't be a little twisted and in style?...

Here is only the 2nd glimpse of my hearts work, which I have been nervous about introducing to the world and a bit hesitant to get out there, but in small steps I reach great lengths (I must recite this to self regularly).

This lasting & unique sculptural art will add texture, interest and style to any space...reclaimed, sandblasted Grapewood, Norweigian moss in green and black on a bed of sea glass and grey fresh water pearls (pearls also found) nestled on the branches in wee little beds of moss and lichen, crystal white sand shimmers in the light...natural, a bit modern with clean lines and simple beauty. Posting soon to my Etsy Shop, and more twisty and turny designs on the way.

When a lovely girlfriend recently requested that I create a design for her Mum for Mother's Day...it got me thinking of that very topic...Mother's...

...they are like proud Peacocks, gracefully doing their business (most of the time)...shining so brilliantly in all their amazing ways and glorious presence.

I, of course, am a Mum (sometimes I don't feel so glorious or shiny, but I do amaze at times).

So, armed with the color red (requested for her Mum's desert home color scheme) and a penchant for Peacock's (Oh lucky me!)...here is what came to be:

I've been working with Grapewood lately for it's natural look, attractive form, and excellent durability, plus it is a renewable resource!

Love the curvy appeal and funky style...here is what came out of my first design.

I never create anything I would not want to have in my own home, this design is like a piece of art adding some whimsy and style to an entryway or mantle (maybe yours!). Yes, it tends on the Seussical (is that a word?) side...however, being transported to grand imagination destinations such as Whoville is really not that bad.. now is it?

On a day trip to the desert this weekend I found myself, inspired again...

I have been wondering what would happen when feathers meet florals and so I created these two pieces for two lovely ladies, and I am happy to say, new friends of mine.

Although the peacock design was more popular (more to come of course!) overall I think these unique and quite feminine pieces are going to spread some soft and easy (low maintenance) cheer to any space. If you think about it feathers in all their beauty, movement and color are a perfect compliment to florals or succulents.

Here are two feather designs for two beautiful birds! It is a pleasure to share the company of great gals.

As a child I was always intrigued by, and in love with terrariums, how interesting it would be to live inside a glass container & to have the calm and peaceful perspective of watching life go by from inside a safe, warm and growing environment ( like a baby in the womb)...

Please forgive the quality of pictures, I am still getting used to my new camera and apparently I need to learn a little more about it.

Oooh...love this design where the line between indoor living and outdoor space is one...how can't we appreciate that living in So. Cal?

After a recent trip to the desert I have been inspired (as I always am there) and enlightened by the whole warm air, clean lines, cool colors and overall feel of good design vibes...mid century modern design found it's way to the desert through many talented architects in the 50's & 60's (ie William Krisel) who ventured into new territory and design which we (fortunately) can still see there today....great stuff.

Boring to Beautiful...the story of a desk chair made happy!

Hi there & welcome!

For a while now I have been looking and searching for a new desk chair. It is not that the one I have is broke or not comfortable, it is just so darn BORING! I inherited it from a company I once worked for, and I happen to know it cost quite alot of money.
It is one of those ones that is on rollers, and the back and seat adjust. So I thought I would buy some kind of cool, old wing back chair from a consignment or estate sale and pick some funky fabric and have it reupholstered. Well, nothing was doing it for me and plus it was adding up to be costly.

Then I am hit with a wonderful idea after stumbling upon some fabric I had and that was to refinish that darn chair myself, so I did this in a matter of one hour! Tada! New office chair and when I tire of this I can change it out again!

Presentation at Farmer's Market

Welcome!
Had alot of fun doing a presentation at the Farmer's Market on Sunday to an intimate crowd of very interested and captive ladies.

Topics included how to shop your home and utilize what you have to create a refreshed and renewed space, as well as some key tips to live by when ready to tranform any space in your home.

One question from the audience went as follows: "What can I do about a huge rug in a room, should I put it under the couch? It is up against the wall where the couch sits against the wall as well..."

Answer: No Wallflowers! Pull that couch out away from the wall and bring the rug with it, so that the flooring, in her case, tile, will sort of 'frame' the rug and distinguish that seating area....she had not thought of bringing the furniture away from the wall and just had it pushed up against there so long, she figured that was the only way. Not so, by pulling furniture away from the wall and 'floating' it in the room, as well as clustering in conversation groupings adds interest to the room and eliminates large, empty spaces in the middle of the room.

ReDesign & Reveal Party Before and Afters

Welcome to the Blog.
I have coined and created a very fun concept: R & R Parties! Hosted by KZ interiorz...here are some pictures from one ReDesign & Reveal event. My client invited 6-8 friends, neighbors, co-workers, family (anyone!), and KZ interiorz hosted coffee/danish/fruit in the a.m., everyone got to check out the space(s) to be ReDesigned and then they all left for the day. Upon returning for wine and cheese, everyone walked into completely new and transformed spaces, in this case the living room and dining room...

This art piece was something I stumbled upon, and it complimented the space perfectly! The client has a unique color palette and art (which is what she wanted) was going to be a tricky purchase...until I found this awesome piece, which not only had a similar shade of orange but had openings to showcase her wall color and really make the room complete!

Working with what she had (shopped other rooms!) this room became what she envisioned: Warm, Welcoming and Stylish!
